Mike Bidwell

Property. Forty-odd years of it.

Cambridge, East Anglia, London and a fair bit further afield.

This page is about me rather than the business: what I’ve done, how I work, and how I might be useful if you’re an agent or a business owner working out what comes next.

I started out as a commercial agent and auctioneer, found my vocation in residential and spent the best part of two decades building and running one of the country’s best-known upmarket estate agency brands, and since 2017 I’ve run my own agency, Exquisite Home, from Cambridge.

How I work

My pledge hasn’t changed since I first wrote it down. I will take the trouble to understand what you’re trying to achieve, and give you honest advice designed to get you there in your timescale, not mine.

I’ll tell you what I can do and what I can’t. If I don’t know something, I’ll find out rather than guess. And I’ll treat you with fairness, consideration and respect, which sounds obvious until you’ve dealt with people who don’t.

About Mike

I’ve been in property since the early 1980s. I trained as a commercial surveyor and auctioneer, joined the old ISVA, and learned the trade the proper way: on the rostrum and on the doorstep.

Most of my working life was spent at Fine & Country. I went from general manager to national sales director to chief operating officer, sat on the main board of its parent company, and ran the licensing of the brand at home and abroad. I also ran the East Anglia and Cambridge businesses.

After that I led membership growth at the Guild of Property Professionals, then went back to the sharp end as a self-employed agent. In 2017 I set up Exquisite Home.

Some numbers, because people ask. My largest single sale was £13.1 million, in Park Street, Mayfair. In the twelve months to January 2026 I personally sold over £54 million of property. I’ve run my own businesses for more than thirty years.

I’m currently going through the RICS Senior Professional Assessment towards chartered membership. I’d rather say that plainly than put letters after my name that I haven’t earned yet.

Off duty: rowing, rugby, Ipswich Town, and a house in Normandy that I’m slowly coming to terms with selling.

What I do today

Exquisite Home is an independent estate agency selling houses at the upper end of the market across Cambridgeshire, Suffolk, north Essex, south Norfolk and the edges of Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire.

I’m the one who comes out to see you and takes the house on; an experienced team does the rest, and does it well.

If you want to sell a house, that is where to find me: exquisitehome.co.uk

Mentoring and consultancy

After four decades I have opinions, most of them earned the hard way, and I’m happy to share them.

A conversation first, and we’ll talk about cost only if there’s something worth paying for. Some conversations are just conversations.

Where I tend to be useful:

  • An independent agent working out how to grow, how to price, or how to step back without the business falling over.

  • An owner planning the handover of a business they built. I’m doing it myself, so I know which bits keep you awake.

  • Anyone weighing up a licence or a franchise against going it alone. I sold licences for a living and I’ve bought them too, so I know what the brochure leaves out.

  • Auctions, and whether one is the right route for a particular property or a particular seller.

Over the years of working with Mike, I found him to be one of the most enthusiastic and dynamic proponents of the "complete property service". He was one of the few people that I met that genuinely understood the importance of offering more than just a house selling operation.
